The bricks and mortar that make up your chimney structure can be damaged in various ways including:
- A chimney fire
- Water infiltration/chimney leaks
- Shifting of the chimney footing
- Lightning strikes and pounding hail
- Year after year of searing and freezing temperatures
- Plain old age
No matter the cause, masonry damage must be dealt with as early as possible to keep the problem from progressing into an unsafe operating situation.
When basic chimney repair all the way up to full chimney rebuilding is required, you need qualified professionals to oversee the work. We know how to solve any problem with your chimney’s masonry.
Chimney rebuilds: When damage is significant, we can perform partial or complete chimney rebuilding. Often this is the only way to make the chimney safe to use and live around again.
Tuckpointing: This process adds fresh new mortar to areas of missing and crumbling mortar to restore strength to your chimney structure.
Brick replacement: Spalling bricks that are beginning to decay and fall away from the chimney need to be replaced to prevent serious water damage.
Chimney waterproofing: After the necessary repair work, we can apply a strong waterproof sealant to prevent water from infiltrating the chimney system in the future.
Before we can rebuild a chimney, we have to remove what is left of the old one. This is an intricate job that must be performed by chimney technicians who are trained in this work. Removing a chimney is not a simple “demolition” project where you can just go out and start tearing down the structure.
We take into account how the chimney is connected to the roof, walls or framing, where in the home the chimney is located (along a wall or within a room), and if the chimney runs through a ceiling only or through multiple floors. These and other factors dictate the specific methods we use to remove the chimney.
In some cases, we need only remove the chimney stack (the part above the roof). Other times, we’ll have to remove the entire chimney including the stack and the chimney breast (the part below the roof.) A chimney inspection will tell us how much of the chimney should be removed.
You’ll find a lot of wonderful historic homes throughout South Framingham and the South Shore region. Maintaining these homes requires varying degrees of work, as does maintaining their chimneys.
Chimneys built prior to the early 1900s often don’t have protective chimney liners. Additionally, many of these historic chimneys have not been kept up to municipal codes.
Areas of focus during a historic chimney restoration include:
- Venting system efficiency
- Structural integrity
- Masonry damage
- Chimney crown issues
- Chimney caps/flue covers
- Chimney flashing
- Chimney liner – repair or install new
- Fireplace damper
You put a lot of care and time into your older home. Let our certified chimney technicians make sure your historic chimney is in great shape, too.
