Chimney Inspections: What the Experts Say

Both the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the Full Training recommend that all chimneys be inspected annually to prevent chimney fires, carbon monoxide intrusion, and other chimney safety related hazards. The technicians at Above & Beyond Chimney Service fully understand all national codes and standards and chimney inspections, and we’ve agreed to comply with the chimney professional code of ethics at all times. We take our chimney inspections very seriously, as we know they can locate problems that could potentially save our customers’ lives and their homes. We also like to use these inspections as an opportunity to educate our customers about chimney and fireplace safety.

What Does A Chimney Inspector Look For?

Depending on the inspection level required by your chimney and your individual situation, our technicians will look for the following when inspecting your chimney:

  • Basic soundness of the chimney structure and flue
  • Proper clearances and flu sizing
  • Correct appliance installation and connections
  • Obstructions such as debris, birds’ nests, animals, and insects
  • Combustible deposits—chiefly creosote
  • Leaky Chimney

In the event of a fire, transfer of property, or a change to your heating appliance, our inspectors will also look at the following:

  • Attics, crawlspaces, and basements—basically, all accessible portions of the chimney interior and exterior
  • If necessary, removal or destruction of permanently attached portions of the chimney will be needed

The 3 Levels Of Chimney Inspection

More than 10 years ago, the NFPA adopted three levels of chimney inspection into its code—to streamline the inspection process and prevent it from being left to the discretion of various chimney sweep companies.

Which inspection your chimney needs depends on your situation. If nothing about your heating appliance has changed and you plan to use it in the same way, a Level 1 inspection will normally suffice. This is the most common type of inspection and involves an examination of the readily accessible parts of your chimney’s interior and exterior, as well as the accessible parts of your appliance and its connection to your chimney.

A Level 2 inspection is required when changes have been made to your system—such as having your chimney relined, a change in fuel type, or a change in the shape of or material in your flue. Level 2 inspections are also recommended after a property has been sold or transferred or after there’s been a chimney fire. When a Level 1 or Level 2 inspection has revealed a hidden hazard, a Level 3 inspection is advised.

These inspections require that permanently attached portions of your chimney or building structure be removed to gain complete access to the chimney. If you have questions about the chimney inspection process, we’re happy to answer them for you.
